A former teacher has been named president of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Peggy Brookins, a former math teacher in Florida, will officially take charge of the NBPTS after serving as interim president and CEO , who passed away from lung cancer in June.

This appointment marks the first time that an NBCT will officially be in charge of the National Board, according to today鈥檚 press release. Brookins obtained her certification in math at the adolescent and young adulthood level in 2004.

鈥淒igging into the National Board standards and certification process was a transformative experience for me and my teaching practice,鈥 Brookins said in the release. 鈥淚 am passionate and excited to spend the rest of my professional career working towards ensuring every teacher in this country is supported and expected to reach the same level of practice.鈥

In 1994, Brookins focused on engineering and manufacturing at Forest High School, in Ocala, Fla. She has served on numerous task forces and was on the board of directors for NBPTS from 2008-11. In July 2014, President Obama appointed her to the President鈥檚 Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.
