How do you prepare students to be engaged, active, and empowered young adults? Creating a classroom atmosphere that encourages students to pursue critical inquiry and the many skills it requires demands artful planning on the part of the teacher. But it also means that students are likely to pursue ideas and projects that could make educators uncomfortable. How do we square that circle?

Join Peter DeWitt when he sits down with high school social studies teacher Matthew Cone and two of his graduating students for a thoughtful conversation on creating powerful project-based learning and a classroom atmosphere in which it can thrive.

Speakers
Matthew Cone
Social Studies Teacher Carrboro High School, North Carolina
Matthew Cone has been teaching for 11 years at Carrboro High School in North Carolina. His project-based learning classes focus on contemporary global political and cultural issues. His students engage directly with academics, journalists, lawyers, politicians, and activists as they pursue their research projects, which culminate in a communitywide presentation before hundreds of people. To date, students have met with William Sturkey, Colson Whitehead, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Wesley Lowery, and Bryan Stevenson, among others. His students, seniors Julian Taylor and Phoenix Tudryn, will join the conversation.
Julian Taylor
Class of 2021 Carrboro High School, North Carolina
Julian Taylor is a co-founder of Carrboro High School鈥檚 Black & Brown Student Coalition, which provides students of color with a platform to address schoolwide racial inequities directly with teachers and administrators. The coalition produces an anonymous student podcast, which offers feedback to faculty from students of color. This fall, Julian will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead-Cain Scholar.
Phoenix Tudryn
Class of 2021 Carrboro High School, North Carolina
Phoenix Tudryn is a co-founder of CHS鈥檚 Black & Brown Student Coalition, which supports the representation of Black & Brown voices in white-dominated spaces. The coalition has worked to provide students with free ACT tutoring, aided educators to provide students with equitable curricula, and helped remove economic barriers from student events. Next year, Phoenix will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
